What a year 2020 has been. The Covid-19 pandemic has had an impact on our lives in so many ways—how we work, conduct business, socialize, learn and simply go about our daily routines.
UMGC to Take Part in Pilot Project to Inform Course Design, Student Support Services and Transfer Credit Policies
Adelphi, Md. (Nov. 24)—The newly formed U.S. Naval Community College (USNCC) announced today that University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) is one of five institutions chosen to participate in a six-month pilot program to gather data and inform the USNCC’s development as it prepares to welcome its first students. The pilot program will be conducted from January to June 2021.
Closing schools during the coronavirus pandemic has exposed inequities in the education system that need to be fixed even after students return to the classrooms, University of Maryland Global Campus Education Program Director Monica Simonsen, Ph.D., told Maryland House Ways and Means subcommittee members at a Nov. 19 hearing.
Adelphi, Md. (Nov. 17, 2020)—On Saturday, Nov. 7, University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) cybersecurity competition teams claimed 1st and 3rd place, as well as three additional top 20 places, in the Ninth Annual Mid-Atlantic Gigabit Innovation Collaboratory (MAGIC) Competition, a capture-the-flag (CTF) event that included more than 190 students across the United States and Estonia.
Breaking into the field of cybersecurity can be daunting. Likewise, the difficult decision of whether to follow a technical or management and policy route is, perhaps, equally overwhelming. Choosing the right path, said a trio of former University of Maryland Global Campus students, often depends on one’s academic and professional goals.
“This Veterans Day, whether you celebrate it solemnly or festively, please take a moment to remember those men and women who have worn the uniform of this nation throughout its history,” said Major General Milo Miles (U.S. Army, Ret.), senior vice president of Global Military Operations at University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC.) “It is a privilege to serve them and an honor to serve beside you.”
Miles’ remarks are a fitting conclusion to a compelling, personal reflection about his family’s history of military service, including his father’s service in three conflicts, beginning in Japan with the U.S. Army’s occupation forces at the end of World War II.
Even in the most enduringly trying of times, University of Maryland Global Campus Alumna Bonnie Broh-Kahn ’77 believes that kindness shines through. In that spirit, amidst the ongoing challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, she and her husband Jere recently established endowment funds through a $1 million bequest to the university.
Louis Carter was a terrific conversationalist, an unofficial life coach, a solid singer who showed his range during a solo at his daughter’s wedding and a daily morale-booster for University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) staff in Largo. He accomplished all this while also performing his official duties as a security coordinator at the university.
You’re a police officer, firefighter, EMT or emergency manager who wants to advance to an administrative position. Here is your dilemma: You need advanced training to qualify for the promotion, but employers often do not provide advanced training until you have the job.
That is a niche University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) is filling with its new Public Safety Executive Leadership certificate program launching in January.
With some Americans questioning the safety of vaccines while others are demanding rapid deployment of them at this critical moment in fighting Covid-19, University of Maryland Global Campus School of Arts and Sciences Dean Kara Van Dam asked microbiologist Jim Coker, chair of UMGC’s Science Department, to explain how the vaccine process works.
