(Dec. 9, 2020)—University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC), the largest online public university in the country, and Apex Systems, a world-class technology services firm, announced today an alliance that aims to increase upskilling and reskilling Apex consultants and employees with a focus on military veterans getting jobs in the cybersecurity field.
UMGC to Take Part in Pilot Project to Inform Course Design, Student Support Services and Transfer Credit Policies
Adelphi, Md. (Nov. 24)—The newly formed U.S. Naval Community College (USNCC) announced today that University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) is one of five institutions chosen to participate in a six-month pilot program to gather data and inform the USNCC’s development as it prepares to welcome its first students. The pilot program will be conducted from January to June 2021.
To mark the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, the University of Maryland Global Campus annual Veterans Day ceremony saluted that generation of GIs—and those among their ranks who also were the originators of the university and its commitment to educating veterans and active duty personnel the world over.
“This Veterans Day, whether you celebrate it solemnly or festively, please take a moment to remember those men and women who have worn the uniform of this nation throughout its history,” said Major General Milo Miles (U.S. Army, Ret.), senior vice president of Global Military Operations at University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC.) “It is a privilege to serve them and an honor to serve beside you.”
Miles’ remarks are a fitting conclusion to a compelling, personal reflection about his family’s history of military service, including his father’s service in three conflicts, beginning in Japan with the U.S. Army’s occupation forces at the end of World War II.
At Ali Al Salem Air Base, Kuwait, University of Maryland Global Campus Professor Gordon Leitch, PhD, is teaching Math 103 to his students poolside because their regular classroom is not big enough to practice “social distancing.” Unfortunately, the students can’t enjoy a post-class swim because the pool is closed due to the coronavirus.

University of Maryland Global Campus celebrated its first-ever class of graduates under its new name with two separate commencement ceremonies at the Xfinity Center in College Park, Maryland, on Saturday, Dec. 14. University of Maryland University College became University of Maryland Global Campus on July 1.
The University of Maryland Global Campus’ cybersecurity team, known as the Padawans, took third place in the Maryland Cyber Challenge on Dec. 6, competing against teams from universities from all over the country as well as the state.
A traditional Hawaiian ceremony was the celebratory centerpiece as University of Maryland Global Campus dedicated in late October its first civilian classroom site in Hawaii, UMGC @ Pearl City, located near the entrance to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Honolulu County.
