“Long, but a worthwhile journey.” That’s how Jennifer Levine, who attended the combined commencement ceremony at Naval Station Norfolk on May 26, described her path to earning a bachelor’s degree in marketing from University of Maryland University College (UMUC).
Amid the fanfare of faculty, family and friends, nearly 3,600 of the 9,023 University of Maryland University College stateside graduates walked the stage and received their master’s, bachelor’s and associate’s diplomas in three separate ceremonies on Saturday and Sunday, May 14 and 15, when UMUC held its 2016 stateside commencement exercises at the Xfinity Center in College Park, Maryland.
In her keynote address to University of Maryland University College Europe (UMUC Europe) Class of 2016, a class marked by multiple firsts, Ambassador Marriët Schuurman invoked the words of anthropologist Margaret Mead in challenging celebrants to “never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.”
The day was full of triumphant smiles and jubilant cheers as years of hard work and dedication were celebrated by more than 200 University of Maryland University College Europe (UMUC Europe) graduates at the Gartenschau Event Hall in Kaiserslautern, Germany, on April 30.

Graduates Hail from All 50 States and 20 Countries
University of Maryland University College held its 2015 stateside commencement exercises on Saturday and Sunday, May 16 and 17, at the Xfinity Center in College Park, Maryland. In all, nearly 11,000 graduates from all 50 states, plus the District of Columbia and Guam, and 19 other countries earned degrees this year, with more than 3,200 of the 9,023 members of the stateside class of 2015 attending the three stateside ceremonies over the weekend.

ADELPHI, Md. (May 4, 2015)—University of Maryland University College will celebrate its 2015 stateside commencement with three separate ceremonies at the Xfinity Center in College Park, Maryland, on May 16 and 17. Approximately 3,000 of the 9,023 stateside graduates in the Class of 2015 will attend the three ceremonies.
University of Maryland University College held commencement ceremonies on Saturday and Sunday, May 17-18, at Comcast Center in College Park, Md. More than 9,000 people from all fifty states and 17 countries earned degrees, with a total of more than 3,200 graduates attending three ceremonies over the weekend. Graduates were inspired by keynote speakers and student speakers and enjoyed the feeling of accomplishment as they walked across the stage to receive their diplomas in front of family and friends.
University of Maryland University College hosted for the first time a doctoral commencement on Friday, May 16, at the College Park Marriott Hotel and Conference Center. In accordance with long-standing academic tradition, each doctoral candidate was hooded by their dissertation advisor during the special ceremony in Adelphi.
Prior to commencement over the weekend, more than 1,000 new UMUC graduates and their families gathered for a reception at the College Park Marriott Hotel and Conference Center on Friday evening, May 16. Many were meeting their fellow graduates and faculty in-person for the first time after completing their coursework online.
