UMGC President Gregory W. Fowler Named to The Daily Record’s Power 30 Higher Education List for Second Consecutive Year

Maryland’s influential newspaper for business, legal and government leaders has published its Power 30 Higher Education List for the second consecutive year, and once again UMGC President Gregory W. Fowler is among those in this prestigious group.

“Maryland has justly earned a reputation as home to some of the finest institutions of higher education in the nation,” The Daily Record said in announcing its list. “The men and women who make up our second annual Power 30 Higher Education List are among the reasons why. They are presidents and other senior administrators leading their colleges and universities, policymakers charting a course for the future, advocates striving to improve access and equity and faculty members on the cutting edge of research and the liberal arts.”

Fowler is a nationally recognized scholar and leader in developing innovative learning models and experiences for adult and nontraditional populations, as well as a highly sought-after speaker at national and international conferences.

He began his tenure as president of UMGC in January 2021, and has led several major initiatives, including the implementation of a success coach model that provides each student with consistent support throughout their academic career at UMGC, that have built on the university’s deep history of innovation in serving adults in the workforce and in the military in Maryland and around the world.

Fowler’s commitment to meeting students where they are and providing quality academic programs, as well as wrap-around services from admission to graduation and beyond, is transforming the university at a time of revolutionary change in higher education and the devastating economic impact of the global coronavirus pandemic on all levels of education.

In the newspaper’s Power 30 Higher Ed profile of Fowler, he was asked to identify the most important thing he does in his job. His response: “Create an environment where our team members can remove barriers and create pathways for students to succeed who have not always had access to opportunity—which in turn can transform lives, communities, and our world.”

Fowler was also asked if he had a significant mentor in his life, and what he learned from that person. Fowler said it wasn’t a single person. “My family as a whole has taught me to endure, accepting success and failure with grace and humility,” he said.

This list was chosen by the newspaper’s editorial team, who also reached out to readers and others for input and perspective. According to the newspaper, they “explored how these leaders view the higher education landscape, how it now exists and what it may look like in the future. And we’ve tried to provide a glimpse into the kind of people they are, what drives them to excel, to serve, to teach.”

University of Maryland Global Campus and College of Lake County Establish Transfer Agreement to Accelerate Pathway to a Bachelor’s Degree

Adelphi, Md. (April 28, 2022)—University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) and the College of Lake County in Illinois (CLC), a community college located in suburban Chicago, have announced a partnership that will expand the reach of UMGC’s 90 online academic programs and increase the affordability of a bachelor’s degree to CLC’s 14,000 students.

Under the alliance’s transfer agreement, students can transfer a minimum of 60 credits when they complete an associate’s degree and be guaranteed admission to a UMGC bachelor’s degree program in a complementary field of study.

“Our partnerships with four-year colleges help students continue their educational journey,” said CLC President Dr. Lori Suddick. “Online programs like UMGC allow students to stay in Lake County and give them the flexibility they need to set their own time for learning. UMCG’s commitment to military students aligns with College of Lake County’s focus on the veteran student population.”

All degree-seeking CLC students, graduates, and employees of the college, as well as their spouses and dependents who attend the college, will receive a waiver of the UMGC application fee and a discount on out-of-state tuition for most programs of study.

Asia Diary: President Fowler Presides at Commencement in Japan, Visits USS Ronald Reagan

In Japan to take part in two commencement ceremonies, University of Maryland Global Campus President Gregory W. Fowler enjoyed a rare opportunity to visit Yokosuka Naval Base, meet with students and tour the USS Ronald Reagan, America’s flagship forward-deployed supercarrier in the Navy’s 7th Fleet.

Fowler’s presence at the April 9 graduation ceremony in Tokyo for 112 graduates, mostly active-duty military servicemembers, marked his first Asia trip as UMGC’s president. He said he felt “privileged to have met and celebrated with our graduates in Japan,” and he wished them successful post-graduation journeys.

He visited the naval base on his way to Okinawa for an April 16 graduation ceremony at Kadena Air Base.

“It’s incredible to see and learn about the military culture surrounding our overseas students, faculty and staff,” Fowler posted on social media after the April 12 tour of the nuclear-powered ship.

“I was blessed to spend some time with our students at Yokosuka as well as time on deck with some of the leadership and crew of the USS Ronald Reagan. Everyone was even more gracious and amazing than I expected and reminded me of of how important it is that we provide excellent service and opportunities to those who serve us so well,” he said.

UMGC’s presence in Asia dates back to 1956, when it first sent faculty to teach active-duty military students on bases in Japan and Korea. UMGC had already become the first university to offer classes overseas when it began teaching in Germany in 1949.

The university’s faculty were in the thick of the fighting during the Vietnam War, taught students on remote islands and provided education programs from Tokyo to Seoul, from Bangkok to Taipei, and to Woomera, a remote part of South Australia.

UMGC now offers classes to military service personnel and their families at more than 180 locations in more than 20 countries. More than half of the university’s students are active-duty military personnel, their families, members of the National Guard and veterans.

Springboard and University of Maryland Global Campus Partner to Increase Pathways to Careers in High-Skill Fields

Largest University Partnership To-Date Will Offer Six Programs Beginning with Software Engineering,
Cyber Security and Data Analytics

Springboard, an online learning platform that helps prepare students for in-demand careers through mentor-guided courses and programs, has joined University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC), the nation’s largest online public university, in an alliance through which UMGC students can take Springboard courses in software engineering, cybersecurity and data analytics, with an additional three career tracks forthcoming.

Students who complete Springboard’s six-month, non-credit courses can also receive credit toward a bachelor’s degree at UMGC.

“Springboard’s programs are highly-responsive to the changing needs of today’s labor market and bring accessible, affordable and flexible education to the masses,” said Gautam Tambay, Springboard co-founder and CEO. “UMGC has been leading the charge in innovating online education, and by bringing our human-guided approach to one of the most prestigious online universities in the country, we are confident that we can help offer new pathways to success for UMGC’s students.”

The partnership is Springboard’s largest to date and is designed to prepare students for high-tech fields in which the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 13 percent growth in the current decade alone—faster than any other occupation.

“This alliance not only offers a nontraditional pathway to career success but also a credential that is relevant and closely tied to ensuring employment,” said Dr. Greg Fowler, president of UMGC. “While we are always supportive of learners who pursue degrees, this partnership is another way for us to support learners who will transform their lives with different experiences, as well as demonstrate our willingness to partner with businesses to ensure workforce readiness.”

Springboard’s curriculum is developed by industry experts, and students have access to hands-on support from industry professionals and guidance from career coaches on building a network and landing a job. UMGC students who enroll in the courses will gain real-world experience and develop unique portfolios of work.

  • Software Engineering covers key aspects of front-end web development, back-end web development, databases, and data structures and algorithms throughout the software engineering curriculum and includes two capstone projects.
  • Cyber Security students will participate in a 360-hour bootcamp that covers industry fundamentals, systems and network security, vulnerability assessment, and security operations, followed by a capstone project designed to showcase specialized skills to potential employers.
  • Students in Data Analytics will go beyond technical skills in the bootcamp to focus on areas where employers find the biggest gaps—strategic thinking, problem-solving, and communication.

Springboard students in similar programs have received job offers from companies such as Amazon, Facebook, Dell, IBM, Salesforce and more than 50 percent of the Fortune 100. The programs will be open to the public, and prospective students will not need previous industry or academic experience to enroll. Students who complete the program will receive a certificate of completion.

Enrollment for the Software Engineering, Cyber Security and Data Analytics career tracks open April 25, 2022 and classes will begin on June 13, 2022.
